Adaptive toys help children with disabilities play like other kids

At AWWA, Cheryl is an Occupational Therapist at AWWA’s Early Intervention Centre (EIC) @ Fernvale Link. She found that many of her clients with physical and multiple disabilities were unable to take part in traditional play. She also discovered that many commercially available adaptive toys were expensive and often not suited to the unique needs of her clients. This inspired her to begin modifying regular toys for her clients.

Ms Chia and her colleagues at Fernvale Link now have 20 adaptive toys in their collection at the AWWA Early Intervention Centre in Fernvale Link, from soft toys like teddy bears, to trains and buses with large switches. The article also provides insight into how early intervention professionals at SPD have been using modified toys and adapted switches in their early intervention programmes for infants and children since 2016.
