Volunteer Spotlight: Nursing Special Students’ Needs with Patience

Since 2007, students of AWWA School and AWWA Early Intervention Centre have been receiving free dental services at the in-house dental clinic, supported entirely by a group of volunteer dentists.

AWWA nurse Magdalene Wong, spent the past 11 years faithfully supporting the volunteer dentists and providing medical assistance to the students.   She feels a great sense of joy and satisfaction in meeting the students’ healthcare and dental needs.

“These kids are very simple, the way they show their love and appreciation is very sincere,” said nurse Magdalene.  She encourages people to be patient when interacting with and caring for children with special needs.  She shared that they respond and express affection in their own special way.

Dr Leonard Lim, the longest serving volunteer dentist out of the 13, has been volunteering his expertise ever since the dental clinic first started.  He has played a very crucial role in supporting the continuity of the dental clinic together with nurse Magdalene.  Dr Lim hardly misses a session with the students.  He is well liked by the students, their parents and caregivers as he is patient and has built very good rapport with them.  He shared that serving AWWA School students has broadened his perspective of life.

AWWA School is constantly looking for regular dental support volunteers who can lend a helping hand to Nurse Magdalene and the team of volunteer dentists at their sessions.
