Volunteer Spotlight: Changing Lives, an Hour a Week

Kay Fitton moved to Singapore in 2012 and felt compelled to give back to the community, like how she had been doing in the UK.

Since 2013, Kay has been volunteering regularly with AWWA Community Integration Service’s (CIS) Home Learning Programme, where volunteers help children with physical or learning disabilities in their studies.

“I love the Home Learning Programme because of its one-to-one aspect. I value being able to build a relationship with the student over time,” said Kay, who was teaching another student with specific language impairment for two years, before she worked with 9-year-old Jerry, who has cerebral palsy, in April 2015.

Through the time invested in her students, Kay observed that they had developed greater interest and confidence in handling the subjects they used to struggle with. She also saw how the deepening of friendship with her students motivated them.

Kay had her fair share of challenges along the way, but persevering despite slow progress and managing parents’ expectations of their children’s academic performance has taught her to be more patient and importance of celebrating success, whether big or small.

One motivation for Kay was being able to support the parents who were often anxious about their child’s future, and seeing how grateful they were.

Kay encourages those who desire to volunteer as a home tutor not to underestimate the difference one hour a week makes to both the child and family.

Not every lesson will feel like a success, but what matters is the overall difference you are making beyond the students’ grades – building their confidence, self-esteem and helping them find joy in learning.

“I don’t think I ever expected this variety of changes! It is wonderful to look back and reflect on how both students have changed.”
