Providing Dental Services to Children with Special Needs on Every Friday

Since 2006, dentist Dr Leonard Lim has been dedicating every Friday of the week to volunteer at AWWA School. He faithfully spends his Fridays providing dental services to students from morning and afternoon sessions. He even spread the spirit of volunteerism to his staff – clinic nurse who volunteered together with him.

Dr Lim was first attracted to volunteerism back in his university days as a fresh graduate. He was inspired by the selfless work of his role model, Dr Elliott Myra, an oral surgeon who led health care missions to India, Bintan and Bali, to provide dental services to the poor villages.

As Dr Lim helps the children with special needs at AWWA School, he has broadened his perspective of life professionally and personally and felt more can be done for these kids.

Do you know that it is really a great challenge for parents to find dental service for their children with special needs to upkeep their oral hygiene needs? Most dentists are not trained to handle and will not serve people with special needs. Parents of AWWA School students appreciate the in-house dental facility and the free service to all students. It will not be possible if not for the love and commitment of Dr Leonard Lim.

If you are keen to volunteer your skills or expertise to help the less privileged, please contact our Volunteer Management team at volunteer@awwa.org.sg or 6511 5200.
