AWWA Event: An Evening of Music with Songs for AWWA

Set in an intimate setting, Songs for AWWA, organised and performed by our dedicated volunteers, was held at Victoria Concert Hall on 5 July 2016. The performers delivered powerful operatic vocals that captivated the crowd; the great acoustics created by the structure of the refurbished colonial architecture was an excellent accompaniment.

With the duration of about two hours (with intermission), the opera performers covered songs like Nessun Dorma from “Turandot”, Nella Fantasia, O Soave Fanciulla and many more.

Arranging and coordinating the entire night was not an easy feat but the wonderful collaboration between AWWA and our volunteers, made it a smooth-sailing night.

Mr Laurence Chan, one of the organisers as well as a performer, said “it wasn’t easy putting this together because singing opera requires a lot of energy and discipline from the performers but it forces us to keep fit so we could fuel through the singing and still look fresh.” He also said “scheduling rehearsals was another challenge that required discipline but at the end of the day, we knew our efforts were for a good cause.”

Mr Laurence Chan started his volunteering journey because of his wife, Mrs Maureen Chan, who was the main organiser for Songs for AWWA. She is a dedicated long-term volunteer at AWWA and is a member of the Fundraising Committee.

Mr Chan had developed his love for singing opera after his retirement. Songs for AWWA provided an excellent platform for him to pursue his passion and benefit AWWA clients at the same time.

Volunteering can come in many forms and this is one great example of organising a fundraiser. Like Mr Chan, volunteers can put their skills and/or expertise to support AWWA in many ways.

Songs for AWWA was a definite success with an amount of S$182,550 raised!
