Opening Ceremony of Mrs Kula’s Room

On the 15th of May 2009, friends and relatives gathered on the birthday of the late Mrs. Vimala Kulasakeram for the opening of the recreation room named after her. It was a time to remember and look back fondly upon the dearly missed Mrs Kula.

Mrs Kula was identified as the valiant figure behind projects. Examples include the setting up of AWWA Community Home, AWWA Seniors Activity Centre and AWWA READYCARE Centre. As quoted from Christine Danabalam, ‘Mrs Kula was like a mother hen to the residents’.

She was awarded Public Service Star for her service to the community and 25 years Long Service Award by Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports.

Mrs Kula was a legendary figure who was one of the founder members of AWWA and also the founder chairperson for AWWA Elderly Services. Her relationship with AWWA spanned over  an amazing period of 32 years, this shows her undying devotion and dedication to AWWA. As a forerunner, she had her fair share of exciting tales of the founding years of AWWA. It was definitely not a feat for the faint-hearted who faced challenges such as raising funds for building premises, but Mrs. Kula braved it all. The uphill tasks were faced with an attitude of faithful belief in the possibilities being delivered – Mrs. Kula never stopped believing and never once gave up
